History of the Parish Institute
The building was originally a gardner's cottage. It was built in Victorian times. It was owned by the Back family who lived in the big house that now forms the central part of St Andrew's School. Mrs Back was the aunt of Norman Pares, the Vicar of St Mary's for many years. The houses and flats in Pares Close were built on land that formed the original garden.
When Mrs Eliza Back died on the 17th June 1900 the property was left in her will to be a Parish Room and Club House for use by St Mary's church and the community of Horsell. The institute is a registered charity and is managed in accordance with the terms of the trust set up at the time of Mrs Back's death.
The latest piece of history for the institute was the official re-opening which took place on the 18th April 2015.
The institute has close links to St Mary's church however operates as a separate charity.
